There were 928 guns stolen from vehicles in 2024, a decline of 281 firearms from the previous year and the lowest number taken since 2019. The total number of guns stolen in 2024 was 1,259.
However, guns stolen from vehicles remains around 70% of the total number of firearms stolen year after year.
Number of guns stolen from vehicles & total number stolen over the previous five years:
- 2023: 1,209 taken from vehicles vs. 1,566 total;
- 2022: 1,403 taken from vehicles vs. 1,969 total;
- 2021: 1,307 taken from vehicles vs. 1,842 total;
- 2020: 963 taken from vehicles vs. 1,463 total;
- 2019: 850 taken from vehicles vs. 1,369 total.
The MNPD’s continuing Park Smart program encourages Nashvillians to lock their automobile doors, remove any valuables---especially guns, and take the keys, including spare/valet keys.
MNPD’s special initiative to combat vehicle theft and related crimes, begun last February, has resulted in 1,036 arrests and the recoveries of 560 stolen vehicles and 234 guns.
Just like guns taken from vehicles, stolen autos are routinely involved in criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies.
