Five male teens were arrested overnight after a rash of vehicle burglaries were reported at the Hampton Inn, 5630 Franklin Pike, the Estates at Brentwood, 570 Church Street E, and the Hickory Point Apartments, 15180 Old Hickory Boulevard.
When officers arrived at the Hampton Inn, the suspects, described as young men traveling in a white Hyundai sedan, had fled. A short time later, there was a report of vehicle break-ins at the Estates of Brentwood, followed by similar reports at the Hickory Point Apartments. An MNPD police helicopter quickly responded to the Old Hickory Boulevard apartment complex and relayed to officers on the ground that the suspect Hyundai was backed into a parking spot at an adjacent apartment complex. Several young men ran to the car and attempted to leave but responding officers blocked them in. They fled on foot but were all apprehended. Demarian Couch, 18, was in possession of a stolen firearm. Stolen property and burglary tools were also recovered.
Couch is charged with six counts of burglary of a motor vehicle, theft of a firearm, joyriding, and evading arrest. The other four suspects, two 16-year-olds and two 17-year-olds, are charged in Juvenile Court with a variety of offenses including burglary of a motor vehicle, evading arrest, joyriding, and possession of burglary tools.
The Hyundai had several broken windows and the ignition column stripped. Officers contacted the owner who verified it had been stolen.
The investigation continues into additional vehicle break-ins and other related crimes.
