A self-defense claim is under investigation concerning Monday night’s fatal shooting of Kyrin Gardner, 23, by a rideshare driver.
The driver, Davin Campbell, 44, called 911 twice, first at 9:57 p.m. from the 1100 block of Broadway, where he reported that he had been kidnapped at gunpoint by an individual within his vehicle. The call disconnected before additional information could be obtained. Campbell called the second time at 10:14 p.m. He reported that he had just shot a man who robbed and kidnapped him and was at the intersection of Herman Street and 16th Avenue North. Gardner was found there on the ground and unresponsive as the result of multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene. A loaded pistol was located on the sidewalk near him. Campbell’s pistol was located in the driver’s seat of his Chevrolet Tahoe.
Campbell fully cooperated with Homicide Unit detectives and gave a detailed statement at police headquarters. Campbell said while giving Gardner a ride to a public housing area, he became agitated, pulled a gun, and began making threats.
Campbell was released after giving his statement. The investigation is continuing. Findings will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office at the conclusion.
