Thanks to a citizen’s tip, South and Midtown Hills Precinct detectives responded today to 4501 Packard Drive after a report of a man pulling on vehicle door handles. The ensuing investigation resulted in the arrest of serial theft of/from vehicle suspect Luis Cardona, 20, who is now charged with vehicle theft, two counts of attempted auto burglary, felony marijuana possession, evading arrest and resisting arrest.
The caller provided an excellent suspect description and was able to provide home surveillance video. Images of Cardona were distributed to detectives in the area. He was spotted walking at the intersection of Apache Trail and Packard Drive. Cardona fled from officers, dropping a blue backpack. He ran into a thick brush line where he was taken into custody. A key fob fell out of his pocket. Detectives soon located a 2011 Acura MDX on Packard Drive. They used the key fob to open and lock the Acura which had been reported stolen on Monday. Recovered from the backpack were eight grams of marijuana, a scale, and drug paraphernalia.
Cardona admitted to attempting to break into vehicles. In addition to charges related to today’s arrest, Cardona is also charged with failure to appear and a probation violation. He also has 48 outstanding felony/misdemeanor warrants in Brentwood related to theft from vehicles and vehicle theft.
