Detectives working a special assignment to recover stolen vehicles and arrest those responsible Wednesday night apprehended a man driving a stolen vehicle who was free on $1,000 bond from an auto theft arrest in June of 2022.
Detectives in the area of Murfreesboro Pike and Thompson Lane saw Scott Hanes, 40, get into a spray-painted blue Ford Explorer bearing a stolen license plate. Officers successfully deployed spike strips, flattening two of the vehicle’s tires. Hanes continued driving, refusing to stop. Hanes was followed by a police helicopter as he got onto I-40 eastbound traveling approximately 35 miles per hour while swerving back and forth between lanes. The Explorer eventually became disabled and stopped on the exit ramp to Murfreesboro Pike from I-24 where Hanes was taken into custody.
Recovered from the SUV were a handgun and a glass pipe. Hanes is charged with theft of a vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm (felony drug conviction in Rutherford County), evading arrest, use of a stolen license plate, driving without a license, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He remains jailed on $32,000 bond.
