Greg Blair
Deputy Chief, Crime Control Strategies BureauDeputy Chief Greg Blair joined the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department in February 1998 and worked as a patrol officer for nearly a decade in the Central, Hermitage, and South Precincts. He served as the South Precinct’s Crime Analysis Officer before being promoted to the rank of sergeant in February 2007 and served the North and Hermitage Precinct communities. After being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in June 2010, Deputy Chief Blair worked as patrol detail supervisor in the South and East Precincts before serving as the East Precinct Investigative Lieutenant in July 2011.
In December of 2014, Deputy Chief Blair was promoted to the rank of Captain and served a Field Supervisor for the overnight shift. This position was responsible for managing and advising personnel, after-hours, on essentially all departmental matters. In June 2017, he was assigned to manage the department’s Central Records Division. The Records Division is responsible for developing and maintaining required law enforcement records to conduct the official business of the department. It consists of approximately 60 professional support staff employees who perform a wide variety of tasks, including processing open records requests, data entries, reporting crime statistics to TBI and FBI, facilitate expungements, and manage the NCIC and Teletype Units.
In November of 2019, Deputy Chief Blair served as the Director of Training, overseeing all initial training, annual in-service training, and specialized training within the department. The MNPD Training Academy is CALEA accredited and serves as the foundation of the department by providing students with the highest quality training and knowledge to support the needs of the agency and the community they serve. Additionally, under his leadership, 109 recruits graduated the Academy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Deputy Chief Blair was then appointed to the rank of Commander in December 2020, leading the Madison Precinct community in addressing and improving crime and quality of life issues.
Deputy Chief Blair was appointed to Inspector in January of 2022 and subsequently to Deputy Chief in May of the same year. He oversees the newly formed Crime Control Strategies Bureau, which concentrates on the department’s expansive model of precision policing, the Information Technology Division, and the Body Worn and In-Car Camera programs.
Deputy Chief Blair holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Edinboro University. He is a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum — Senior Management Institute for Police, and Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command. He is also a member of the Police Executive Research Forum, International Association of Chiefs of Police, Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Fraternal Order of Police.
Originally from Western Pennsylvania, Deputy Chief Blair worked for the U.S. Justice Department Federal Bureau of Prisons and served in the US Army Reserves as a Special Agent within the Criminal Investigations Division before beginning his career with the MNPD.
