Convicted felon Deybi Banegas-Ferrera, 32, is charged with aggravated robbery and felon in possession of a firearm for today’s 11:45 a.m. carjacking at Maple Crest Apartments, 311 Natchez Court.
Officers quickly responded to the scene and found the male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Prior to being transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for serious but non-life threatening injuries, he said that he was in the driver’s seat of his Toyota Venza when the suspect walked up and knocked on his window. He rolled down the window and the suspect asked for a cigarette. When he told the suspect that he did not have one, the suspect pulled him out of the SUV and shot him. The suspect then got into the victim’s vehicle and drove away.
Coordinated police work, with assistance from a police helicopter, resulted in locating Banegas-Ferrera outside a Sabre Drive residence. He fled in the stolen vehicle, crashing in the 500 block of Keystone Drive where he was taken into custody. A handgun was located inside the Toyota.
Banegas-Ferrera, who has a previous felony conviction for aggravated assault, is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond.
