A 27-year-old man has been arrested following Tuesday’s 7:25 p.m. crash that critically injured a toddler on Nolensville Pike. The preliminary investigation indicates Mario Alonzo was driving a Chrysler 300 at a high rate of speed up the main entrance to the Highland Apartments when he began to fish tale out of control and struck a 23-year-old woman and her 2-year-old child as she was walking him in a stroller.
The toddler was transported to Vanderbilt Pediatrics with serious injuries. The 23-year-old woman was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with minor injuries.
The Chrysler fled the scene but was quickly located by South Precinct patrol officers based on a witness’ description. The Chrysler sustained damage consistent with the crash and Alonzo was taken into custody.
Inside the Chrysler were multiple bottles of beer in plain sight. A search warrant for a sample of Alonzo’s blood was also obtained.
Alonzo has been charged with vehicular assault, driving without a license, resisting arrest, and open container violation. The investigation is continuing and will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office upon its conclusion.
He is currently being held on $77,500 bond.
