The hit and run driver who fatally struck a pedestrian Sunday at 8:45 p.m. on Myatt Drive at Roosevelt Avenue is charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death, failure to render aid, failure to file an accident report, and failure to provide financial responsibility (no insurance).
The preliminary investigation shows that Sterling L. Jenkins, 43, was driving his Nissan Armada north on Myatt Drive when he struck Gregory Torrance Sr., 65, who was in an unmarked crosswalk using a motorized wheelchair. Torrance, of Nashville, died at the scene.
Jenkins did not stop. He continued north and pulled into Thorntons, 317 Myatt Drive, where surveillance video showed him walking around his SUV inspecting the damage. Jenkins then got back into his Armada and drove off.
A short time later, an MNPD detective followed the course of Jenkins’ travel due to the damaged vehicle’s brake caliper scratching the roadway. Jenkins and the SUV were located at his Canton Pass residence. During an interview, Jenkins admitted he was driving the vehicle and had knowledge that he had been involved in a collision. He is free on $12,000 bond.
The preliminary contributing factor to this fatal crash appears to be Jenkins’ failure to yield the right of way to the pedestrian.
