Violent Crimes detectives today arrested and charged a Madison couple for the September 22 robbery of a woman on North Dupont Avenue. Brittany Edwards, 34, and James Earl Sharp Jr., 32, were taken into custody on Lanier Drive this afternoon after they were identified as the couple that assaulted the woman before stealing her purse.
Sharp went into the Thortons gas station on Myatt Drive that day at approximately 6:30 p.m. attempting to get money from the ATM using his bank card, but cash did not dispense. As he walked around the store, the victim approached the ATM and successfully withdrew cash.
Sharp accused her of stealing his money, which she denied. Sharp exits the store and quickly returns with Edwards where the couple yelled at the victim.
The victim was able to leave the store and drove to North Dupont Avenue where Sharp and Edwards followed her in an older white sedan. The couple cut in front of the victim’s vehicle before they both got out and approached the victim. Edwards proceeded to hit her with a squeegee while Sharp grabbed her purse.
As the pair fled in the white sedan, the victim’s emptied purse was tossed out of the car window. The victim’s wallet, containing cash and bank cards, was taken.
Both Edwards and Sharp are charged with one count of robbery. Edwards is being held in lieu of $5,000 bond. Sharp is being held in lieu of $15,000 bond.
