Update: The pedestrian fatally injured Saturday evening while crossing Lafayette Street at the Lincoln Street intersection is positively identified as Stephen Clay Hunnicutt, 58.Tyresse L. Howard, 29, surrendered himself to officers downtown today and admitted he was driving the Honda Odyssey van that was involved in this fatal pedestrian collision. Howard is being charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death, failure to yield involving death, driving on a revoked license, failure to render aid, and driving without proof of insurance.
The police department’s Fatal Crash Team is working to identify the driver of a 2007 silver Honda Odyssey van that struck and fatally injured a pedestrian who was crossing Lafayette Street at the Lincoln Street intersection a few minutes before 6 p.m. Saturday.
The pedestrian is unidentified at present. He is believed to be a homeless individual who frequented that area.
The investigation shows that the van was traveling inbound at a high rate of speed in the right lane of Lafayette Street. The van hit the pedestrian, which vaulted him onto the sidewalk. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.
A tip from the community led to the discovery of the parked Honda Odyssey on Carroll Street. It has been impounded.
The Medical Examiner’s Office is assisting in the identification of the deceased. Charges are expected to be placed against the driver of the van once he or she is identified.
