Officers today charged Randolph Allen Ford, 73, of Memphis, with felony vehicular assault and felony reckless endangerment for Saturday evening’s collision on 4th Avenue South involving his Dodge Ram pickup truck and a Lime Scooter. The operator of the scooter, Leonard John Patrick Roecker, 23, of Muskego, Wisconsin, received critical life-threatening injuries and is hospitalized at Vanderbilt.
The investigation to this point shows that Roecker pulled onto 4th Avenue South from the Listening Room Café when the pickup truck, which was speeding according to a witness, came up from behind and struck the scooter. The pickup truck then traveled off the left side of the roadway and crossed over a sidewalk before striking a utility pole and railroad ties in a parking lot. Ford was not wearing a seatbelt and struck his head when his vehicle hit the pole. Responding officers noticed indicators of impairment on Ford’s part. He was transported to Vanderbilt, where a blood sample was drawn pursuant to a search warrant for drug/alcohol analysis.
Ford was discharged from the hospital today and arrested. A judicial commissioner set his bond at $15,000.
