Thomas Maxwell, 24, is charged with criminal homicide for Thursday’s 10 p.m. fatal shooting of Dejuan Gadsden, 20, inside the Citgo at 3900 Clarksville Pike.
Officers responded to a robbery alarm at the convenience store and found Maxwell, who was armed with two guns, exiting the business. He was detained. Officers then found Gadsden, who had been shot multiple times, deceased inside.
During an interview, Maxwell claimed that Gadsden had robbed and severely assaulted him last February and that he had fired on Gadsden in self-defense.
A review of surveillance video contradicted his account. It shows Gadsden parking his vehicle and entering the store. A short time later, Maxwell arrives, parks, and also enters the business. As Gadsden approaches the front counter, Maxwell, with firearm in hand, immediately starts to shoot Gadsden. Gadsden did not look at Maxwell beforehand, nor did he reach for anything. After Gadsden fell to the floor, Maxwell leaned over him and continued shooting him.
