TITANS detectives on Tuesday, following up on a Crime Stoppers tip in an unrelated case, saw three men emerge from a breezeway at an apartment complex at 740 Nashboro Boulevard, one of whom, convicted felon Isaiah Newsom, was carrying an AR-15 style rifle.
Newsom, 25, approached a detective's undercover vehicle and pointed the rifle at him. The detective calmly communicated Newsom's actions to nearby team members who moved in. When officers activated their emergency equipment and identified themselves, the three men fled on foot. Newsom was apprehended at an adjacent apartment complex.
The gun, a Windham Weaponry .556 caliber rifle, was recovered in Newsom's flight path with the assistance of the Canine Unit and a police helicopter. The rifle had been stolen in 2023 from a Williamson County Sheriff Deputy's marked patrol vehicle. Newsom claimed that he purchased the rifle at a gun show.
During an interview, Newsom admitted to pointing the rifle at the detective. He said that he did not know that he was a police officer but instead thought he may be an individual out to harm him.
Newsom was convicted in 2017 of two counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of theft in Shelby County (Memphis). He has not been arrested in Nashville and it is unknown how long he has been residing here.
Newsom is charged with aggravated assault against a first responder, felon in possession of weapon, theft of a firearm, and evading arrest. He is being held in lieu of $49,000 bond.
Federal law enforcement partners will be consulted regarding prosecution of Newsom for a federal firearms offense.
