The two men killed in Sunday’s 4:15 p.m. two-vehicle crash, involving an off-duty officer, outside the East Precinct, 936 Trinity Lane, are identified as Joel Skelton, 29, and Patrick McGee, 22, both of Nashville.
The preliminary investigation shows that Officer Patrick McGinnis was leaving the precinct in his personal vehicle, a 2021 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. Officer McGinnis reported that he saw the eastbound Mustang, driven by Skelton, traveling towards him, but did not realize how fast it was going. McGinnis pulled out of the parking lot and struck the passenger side of the Mustang. The car then collided with a utility pole and broke in half. Surveillance video shows the Mustang traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the collision.
Skelton died at the scene. His passenger, Patrick McGee, 22, was transported to Skyline Medical Center where he died.
McGinnis, 33, an eight-year MNPD veteran who is assigned to the East Precinct, sustained non-critical injuries.
Upon completion, the crash investigation will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
