District 17 Council Member Colby Sledge, District 18 Council Member Tom Cash, District 19 Council Member Freddie O’Connell and the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) celebrated the completion of the 12th Avenue South Complete and Green Street Project at an event earlier today. Also, in attendance at the event were WeGo Transit CEO Steve Bland, representatives from the project team, representatives from the Mayor’s Office, and community members. The event concluded with an official ribbon-cutting to celebrate the new complete and green street and a media walk through to point out different elements of this first of its kind bikeway project in Nashville.
"12th Avenue South shows that people matter. That helping a child ride their bike to school is a priority. That keeping a bus rider out of the rain is a necessity. That showing decency and respect to every Nashvillian is non-negotiable.” said District 17 Council Member Colby Sledge. “This is our job as public servants, and this project is one small gesture that says: you matter.”
The project, which creates a safe, connected bikeway network and access to Wedgwood Avenue and Division Street, was in pre-development for several years. The new complete street addresses local connectivity issues that have persisted for decades. 12th Ave South features bike lanes that are physically protected from driving traffic along the entire route, bioswale stormwater infrastructure, bus stop improvements, safer crossings for people walking and using mobility devices, and more. It was completed in coordination with multiple Metro departments, consultants and contractors, and community members and leaders. The project process will be used to inform and improve coordination in future complete streets efforts.
“As mentioned at the Madison Station Blvd Complete and Green Street ribbon-cutting event last August, our infrastructure investments will continue to deliver more complete and green street projects in Nashville,” said NDOT Director Diana Alarcon. “Complete and green street projects like 12th Ave South are essential to connecting all of our roadway users—people walking, using transit, and driving. These streets help us get closer to our goal of being a safe, pedestrian friendly multimodal city. This project is a success story, and I’m so grateful to the council members and community members for helping us get here.”
The project team for 12th Avenue South included LDA Engineering as the bikeway program management consultant, with engineering by CDM Smith, and community engagement by Fairpointe Planning. The construction team included Collier Engineering, Roy T. Goodwin, Kerr Brothers, Jones Brothers, Walker Building Group, CK Masonry, and Stansell Electric Company.
