A 22-year-old Nashville man surrendered himself this morning hours after striking an MNPD patrol vehicle while doing donuts on I-24 West in an attempt to flee a traffic stop. Carlos Esquivel was seen driving his Dodge Challenger recklessly at a high rate of speed around 1:30 a.m. on Korean Veterans Boulevard when Central Precinct Officer Joe Medina initiated a stop near Shelby Avenue.
Esquivel continued onto I-24 where he began doing donuts in front of Officer Medina’s vehicle which had its emergency equipment activated. He then accelerated in the opposite direction of traffic toward Medina’s patrol car, striking it head-on, before fleeing up the entrance ramp.
Officer Medina was injured in the crash and transported to the hospital. He was treated and released this afternoon.
Detectives were able to run the Challenger’s license plate and identified Esquivel as the driver involved.
He is now charged with aggravated assault on an officer, felony evading arrest, reckless driving and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He is currently jailed on $27,500 bond.
