The investigation into the accidental self-inflicted shooting death of eight-year-old Phillip’e Woodard on September 14 has resulted in the arrest of his grandmother, Gracie Patton Mimms, 48, on charges of criminal homicide and aggravated child neglect.
Mimms was determined to have been the adult responsible for Philllip’e when she departed the N. 2nd Street home to go spend time with friends. She is alleged to have left him inside a room where a loaded shotgun was out and easily accessible. Phillip’e was handling the shotgun when it went off, fatally wounding him.
Lead Detective Chris Beery of the Youth Services Division swore out the arrest warrants after staffing the findings of the investigation with the District Attorney’s Office.
