Investigation by Vehicle Crimes detectives led to Wednesday afternoon’s arrest of two teens who were traveling in a stolen 2019 Hyundai Sonata that struck a Metro School bus in the 2000 block of Hobson Pike.
Prior to the collision, officers saw the Sonata leave a Dali Court residence. A police helicopter was following the stolen car when officers unsuccessfully deployed spike strips. The driver, Omar Diouf, 18, fled at a high rate of speed. He drove recklessly through a school zone, clipping the rear of a school bus and causing minor damage. One child was taken to the hospital where they were treated and released.
The police helicopter continued to follow the car, telling ground units when Diouf and his passenger, Saibey Danjo, 18, bailed from the vehicle on Ransom Place. Both were apprehended.
Diouf is charged with vehicle theft, theft, evading arrest, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving on a suspended license. He is being held on $65,000 bond. Danjo is charged with joyriding and evading arrest. He is free on $5,000 bond.
The Hyundai Sonata was stolen on April 14 from a Village Hills Drive parking lot where it had been left unlocked with the key fob inside and reportedly with a dead battery.
The investigation also led to the recovery of a 2018 Kia Optima that had been reported stolen on April 23 from a Hobson Pike apartment complex parking lot.
