A College Grove man critically injured in a July 25 multiple-vehicle collision on I-65 North has died.
The investigation shows that a Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Matthew Pappas, 33, was traveling erratically and at a high rate of speed just prior to the crash. The pickup sideswiped a Subaru Crosstrack and then struck an Audi Q5 from behind. A fourth vehicle, a Ford F-150, was struck on the passenger side by the Audi. The driver of the Audi was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he died yesterday.
Pappas, of Chapel Hill, had an odor of alcohol on his breath, slurred speech, and blood shot glassy eyes. He admitted to drinking a beer prior to the crash. A search warrant was obtained for Pappas’ blood. After he was released from the hospital on July 26, Pappas was charged with vehicular assault, reckless driving, implied consent, and driving on a suspended license. He is free on $16,000 bond.
