Quick action by Central Precinct officers responding to a 6:21 a.m. shooting call on the outdoor 4th Avenue steps between the Municipal Auditorium parking garage and the bus terminal led to the apprehension of Dejuan N. Prime, 19, of Olsen Lane, who is now jailed on charges of attempted criminal homicide and using a gun in the commission of a dangerous felony.
Prime’s gun, a nine millimeter semi-automatic, was removed from his waistband as Officer Cory Fetner arrested him in a parking lot near Junior Gilliam Way and Rep. John Lewis Way. Prime was walking in the lot when Officer Fetner saw that he matched the description that had just been issued of the shooter.
The 20-year-old shooting victim was hit multiple times. He is in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He told detectives that he was walking at the bus station and noticed Prime, whom he did not know, staring at him. He said Prime began following and threatening him, and that he told Prime to get away. He wound up throwing a cup of coffee on Prime and began to run. Prime followed, caught up with him on the steps, and began shooting.
A judicial commissioner ordered that Prime be held without bond pending a hearing in General Sessions Court.
The MNPD continues to operate initiatives, both overt and covert, in the 400 block of Dr. Martin L. King Boulevard and 4th Avenue North to enhance community safety.
