20th and 21st Avenues between Charlotte Avenue and Broadway Boulevard connect to many important destinations, including Ascension St. Thomas Hospital Midtown, Vanderbilt University, and other medical, institutional, and commercial points of interest. Currently, 20th and 21st are one-way streets, with 20th Avenue North one-way in the northbound direction between Broadway and Charlotte and 21st Avenue North one-way in the southbound direction between Charlotte and Broadway.
As a one-way street "couplet" within a two-way street network, 20th and 21st present challenges for emergency access and multimodal mobility and safety. Considering these issues, the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) is conducting a traffic study and developing design plans to convert 20th and 21st from one-way to two-way operations. By converting to two-way operations, NDOT is evaluating opportunities to incorporate bikeways as well as other safety and mobility improvements for all roadway users.
