Detectives are pursuing active leads in this afternoon’s murder in the parking lot of a soon to open 7-Eleven convenience store at the intersection of Gallatin and Maxwell Avenues, and the related subsequent carjacking of a man on I-40.
Tywane Miller, 37, and a 29-year-old woman were driving out of the parking lot in a Toyota sedan at 3:30 p.m. when they were suddenly blocked by a white Ford Flex. At least one person got out of the Flex and opened fire on the Toyota. Miller, the driver, was fatally shot and died at the scene. His passenger suffered non-life threatening wounds to her jaw and hand.
Following the shooting, an East Precinct officer spotted the Ford Flex on Shelby Avenue at I-24. The Ford fled on the interstate at a high speed. An officer pursued the vehicle for a time before discontinuing due to the danger posed to other motorists. The Ford traveled onto I-40 and collided with the center interstate retaining wall and four other vehicles (no one was injured) before coming to a stop on the interstate between Fesslers Lane and Elm Hill Pike. The three occupants of the Flex bailed out and went onto the westbound lanes of I-40 where they carjacked a 35-year-old Nashville man who was driving a 2013 Subaru Forester SUV. One of the suspects hit the victim in the head with a gun in the process. He was not seriously hurt.
The Subaru was discovered abandoned late this afternoon in a Bordeaux neighborhood.
The motive for Miller’s homicide remains under investigation. Detectives from the Homicide Unit, TITANS (The Investigative Team addressing Neighborhood Shootings) squad, and the Violent Crimes Division’s robbery component are collaborating on this case.
