The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) is continuing efforts toward refurbishing Great Circle Bridge. Great Circle Bridge was built in the 1980s to cross Great Circle Lake which is a Metro Water Services managed detention facility.
A Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) inspection in 2021 rated the bridge in Fair condition, and NDOT began long range planning for evaluating refurbishment or repairs. In October 2023, NDOT engaged consultants to begin repair designs. In April 2024, preliminary repair/replacement options were evaluated at over $2 million. Additional inspections and design team collaboration with Metro Water Services were performed to develop potentially more cost-effective alternative design solutions.
One of those additional underwater inspections of the supporting piers were conducted in April 2024, which indicated the piers were no longer sufficient to carry traffic.
NDOT has met with contractors to develop constructable solutions and is finalizing design alternatives in parallel. Due to material and specialized construction crew availability, construction and closure of the bridge is anticipated to last through June 2025.
What to Expect
The bridge remains closed to vehicular traffic and is expected to be closed through June 2025. Access to all businesses will remain open.
